'Mad Mike' Hoare, the famous mercenary leader and Adventurer in Africa, has recently published his sixth book.
It is a true account of his search for the 'Lost City of the Kalahari', and of a disaster in a remote part of the Okavango delta.
In the 1950s, the story of the lost city in the then Bechuanaland (now Botswana) gripped the public imagination. In the first part of the book, Mike tells of his solo trip in 1958 across the Kalahari Desert, his search for the lost city, his visit to the Tsodilo Hills, and a chance meeting with a crocodile hunter that changed the course of his life.
In the second part, he describes how, in 1963, he and his young wife decide to 'drop out' for a year and live deep in the heart of the Okavango delta, also in Bechuanaland. At first, their existence in this water wonderland is idyllic; then disaster strikes. Mike tells how he managed to overcome the obstacles, how then men started dying, and how he ultimately was trapped - there was no escape. He was reduced to nothing. There was only one thing left to do...
